San Diego: 1985 Westfalia Vanagon - Full Camper (Leucadia) $16000

1985 Westfalia Full Camper Poptop Vanagon GL -- Automatic Transmission
Odometer currently reads 164,xxx k

This beautiful Westy has been in our family for 5 years -- we have enjoyed it immensely and treated it with great love. It has given us great love in return. It has been a daily driver, handling our short <10mile roundtrip commute with ease. We've also taken it on several long journeys without any serious complications. It has had lots of attention and work done to it over its lifetime -- some of it was done by the previous owners, and some was done under our care. As should be expected from a 28 year old vehicle, it is not perfect -- but it is a great example of a well loved Westy. Unfortunately as jobs have changed, we just don't have the time and resources to give this Westy the love it deserves. We'd love it to find a new owner who can enjoy it as much as we have.

Clean CarFax report -- I can provide upon request.

I have all original manuals - including the Westfalia Camper Manual add on and the fridge manual.

Van was featured in home page banner on GoWesty.com - see photo above.

Please email with any questions - if this ad is active, the van is still available.

• ENGINE
o Original 1.9L engine was rebuilt up to a 2.1L by previous owner around 30K miles ago -- Original 1.9L block was built up to 2.1L with new oversized pistons and rings, new main and rod bearings -- as well as new belts, hoses, water pump, oil pump, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor
• CAMPER EQUIPMENT
o All equipment is 100% functional and in excellent working condition. It is all also in excellent visual condition, showing very little wear/tear

UPGRADES:

TIRES -- 28" Yokohama Geolander Tires

WHEELS -- 15" Mercedes Benz aftermarket wheels -- these larger than stock wheels and tires GREATLY improve the ride.

EXTERIOR -
o PAINT -- Custom paint all around ~5yrs ago
o TINT -- very high quality tint all around, great for camping privacy and heat regulation done by Sun Solutions -- front windows are 35%, rear are 5%. Lifetime Garauntee (sunsolutions.com)
o ROOF RACK -- Safari Roof Rack basket mounted on Yakima rack and cross bars. Great for hauling gear
o LIGHTS -- front grill and headlights upgraded to 86-91 style -- full assembly from 1987 Vanagon installed
o BUMPERS -- Original bumpers removed and reconditioned then coated with rugged RHINO LINER truck bed liner. Great functionality and look great
o COLGAN CUSTOM AUTO-BRA -- protects the front, and looks nice

INTERIOR --
o Original carpet replaced with front carpet kit from Sewfine (sewfineproducts.com)
o Driver, passenger, rear bench, and rear cargo re-upholstered with very nice Sewfine kit. Upper bunk upholstery is original and in excellent condition. (sewfineproducts.com)
o Go Westy 3-window pop-top canvas tent -- professionally installed and in perfect condition (gowesty.com)
o Go Westy auxiliary battery kit, with heavy duty auxiliary battery. Runs stereo and all camper equipment off of auxiliary battery, preserving main battery for starting the engine. The auxiliary kit allows you to charge both main and auxiliary battery from the regular alternator(gowesty.com)
o 1200 watt power inverter connected to auxiliary battery -- easily run regular plug in devices while camping or while van is in use
o Aftermarket Pioneer stereo system with new front and rear Alpine speakers. Has CD Player, Auxiliary-In, AM/FM, and built in Bluetooth Hands-Free system with mic mounted on headliner above drivers seat
o Custom real hardwood floor
o Custom Go Westy All Weather durable rubber floor mats -- cover entire front carpeted area. (gowesty.com)
o Custom wired reverse lights can be turned on manually for use during camping, loading, etc.

MECHANICAL WORK DONE DURING OUR OWNERSHIP -- I have all receipts for following work
o Front and Rear Brakes -- New pads/drums/rotors, upgraded to Stainless Steel brake lines and full system flush (Coast Brake and Wheel, Encinitas)
o Refrigerator removed and burner box disassembled and cleaned -- now it is easy to start, and cools rapidly down to 30 degrees. These Dometic reefers are notoriously difficult to start and inefficient, and I found that this service has been a big improvement to ease of use and performance.
o New front brake pads, rotor, and bearings
o Full tune-up : Ignition wires, spark plugs, air filter, distributor cap and rotor, new O2 sensors, new alternator belt
o New Radiator
o New Axle assembly, with new CV joints and boots
o New muffler
o New Idle Control Unit

ANYTHING NOT GREAT?
o The body is not 100% - a few light dings/scratches, and showing signs of typical seam rust in a few areas. It is worst under the front windshield in the regular places (see photos). This is an easy fix that I've been waiting for a cracked windshield to tackle.
o The Auto Trans is nearing the mileage that it is going to need some TLC, and it is starting to show signs . No issues shifting, however it has begun to leak ATF and the rate of leak has increased over the past 6 months. This indicates it should have the AT dropped and inspected and any necessary parts serviced/replaced. It could be as simple as a re-seal.
o As you will see in the CarFax report, there was one instance of an inaccurate odometer reading recorded. This occurred prior to us owning the vehicle, however during our ownership we have frequently had issues with the odometer randomly stopping working -this is a very common problem with these cars. There is a small gear that slips out of place, causing the odometer to stop turning. It usually occurs if the reset button is pressed while the vehicle is in motion. While the odometer is working now, with gear put back into place -- it is likely that it may not have been working periodically over the life of this vehicle.
